The IGFSA Executive Committee is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Nigel Hickson. Nigel served on the IGFSA Executive Committee (2019-2025) and as the IGFSA Treasurer (2021-2025). He was, in his own words, a passionate champion of “the economic, social, and political benefits of the Internet; and the importance of multi-stakeholder approaches to its governance” and will certainly be remembered as such by all in the community who knew him. Because of his invaluable capacity for being a thoughtful listener, and for frank, friendly and constructive dialogue with people from all sectors, Nigel embodied the multistakeholder spirit like few others.
A brilliant orator and diplomat who dedicated his career and considerable energy to the Internet Governance community, Nigel was held in high esteem by the global community, who have had the good fortune to work with him in the many roles he has held over the course of four decades: with the UK government, ICANN, the IGF, and as an active member of the IGFSA.
The Executive Committee and IGFSA members valued his dedication, wisdom, humour and above all his friendship. Nigel will be sorely missed.
IGFSA members are encouraged to submit messages of remembrance to honour Nigel here.
